The Pocket guide
There’s no signage or piped music at The Pocket. What there is: matcha and bagels, makeshift tables and plastic stools for patrons, and an oasis of calm in the heart of Kuala Lumpur – more specifically, Pudu.
This hub for food and retail therapy in KL is authentic in its own way and hidden in a literal sense. It’s a spot that most wouldn’t expect to find in Sungai Besi, in KL’s charmingly chaotic Pudu, with an entrance located in a back alley just across a cluster of low-rise apartments.

What is The Pocket?

Past the decorative traffic cones with the words “coffee” and “bagel”, up nondescript stairs, you’ll find The Pocket in an old building that has been reborn in style.

The industrial-concrete hub, which refers to itself as a community centre, opened in July 2025 with a cross-section of independent stores. It’s an urban respite done in shades of post-apocalyptic grey and brown, with communal areas for chilling out and pockets of spaces for food stalls and retail shops.

Bagels with interesting schmears

If you have a bottomless appetite for bagels, you might have already heard of Scrappy Dough. The bagel service at this shop is straight out of a TikTok trend.

There are bagel sandwiches such as Kam Heong Chicken (RM15.90), and upgraded schmears like syrup bandung (RM8) and kombu truffle (RM12). The small but efficient food stall also serves coffee and non-coffee drinks, and a signature Cherry Tomatoes Focaccia (RM14.50).

Must-try strawberry matcha

There’ll always be time to get in, loser, we’re going to get matcha at Looozer once you’ve discovered their menu. The roving matcha pop-up has settled down with a permanent shop at The Pocket, with a lineup of matcha combinations and specials.

The viral Strawberry Matcha (RM17) is available here, with a subtle but satisfying hit of strawberry and the option to swop out regular milk for oat for just RM1. Other drinks worth trying include the Cream Peach Matcha (RM17) and Red Bean Matcha (RM16).

3. Shinmatto
Fresh sashimi rice bowls

Shinmatto used to be a limited-time pop-up store selling all-you-can-take sashimi don at The Pocket. In April, they were reborn as a permanent store specialising in Kaisendon, or fresh seafood rice bowls, that’s priced around RM25 per bowl.
Expect only the freshest catch here. The restaurant flies in fresh sashimi from Japan, offering a signature selection of salmon, sea bream, tuna, and yellowtail. For seafood lovers, Fridays are the ideal day to visit as their weekly shipment typically includes around 70 fresh oysters – though these tend to sell out quickly, sometimes within the same day.

Come for their signature Shinmatto Don (RM32). It features slivers of fresh salmon, tuna, and sea bream with wasabi and pickled ginger, all spread out across a mound of short-grain Japanese rice that’s slightly vinegared.
Shinmatto also carries a rotating selection of seasonal fish imported from Japan. From November through January, expect winter delicacies such as monkfish, yellowtail, and cod to make an appearance on the menu.

4. Dipuu
Cheesecakes with a twist

Dipuu is The Pocket’s resident dessert shop run by a brother-sister duo. While small and with no visible storefront, the hole-in-the-wall shop is loud with its pastel pink walls and its selection of flavoured Basque cheesecakes that stray from the conventional.
Their lineup of Basque cheesecake showcases two Chinese tea-based flavours, Long Jing and Tie Guan Yin, and also more classic riffs like the Madagascar Vanilla and Chocolate.

The Tie Guan Yin Cheesecake (RM18) was a standout, with its distinctly strong floral oolong tea aroma that lingers on your taste buds. While the texture of the cake is dense and slightly gritty, it doesn’t feel too indulgent.

Some would say that LinLin Cake serves the cutest cakes in Klang Valley. The popular cake shop excels in lavish, whimsical cakes that drip with pearls, ribbons, and everything that is girly-pop cute. After dominating our Instagram feeds and TikTok FYP with their playful creations, it has finally landed at The Pocket with a physical store dishing out slices of its almost-too-pretty-to-eat cakes.

The cakes at LinLin Cake come in a few flavours, namely strawberry matcha, lemon, and mango. A slice is priced around RM20, but it’s pretty worth it as the cakes are typically dressed with piped icing animals like capybaras and frogs. It’ll be a feast for the eyes and belly, for sure.
Opening hours: Mon & Wed 12pm-7pm | Fri, Sat & Sun 11am-7.30pm (Closed on Tuesdays & Thursdays)

6. Ramen Monster
Cosy izakaya experience

Ramen Monster at The Pocket feels like one of those izakaya spots you would find in Japan. It’s squishy, with just a handful of bar seats overlooking the kitchen where a chef moves around prepping bowls of piping-hot ramen.

The menu stays true to the izakaya experience, too. There’s just a handful of ramen with broth that’s been boiled for 12 hours, including the recommended OG Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen (RM28), and small bites like gyoza (RM16) and oden.
